EOSC Activities and Projects
What is EOSC?
The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) is an environment, governed by the EOSC Association, meant to federate existing research data infrastructures in Europe and realise a web of FAIR data and related services for science, making research data interoperable and machine actionable following the FAIR guiding principles.
Involvement of Instruct-ERIC in EOSC-related activities and projects
Instruct-ERIC is a partner in the EOSC Association and several EOSC-related projects such as EOSC Beyond and EOSC United. As structural biology is an integral component of the life science network, Instruct’s contribution to the EOSC can provide meaningful benefits to the cloud usage of the European science community.
EOSC Beyond
The ambition of EOSC Beyond is to support the growth of the European Open Science Cloud in terms of integrated providers and active users by providing new EOSC Core technical solutions that allow developers of scientific application environments to easily compose a diverse portfolio of EOSC Resources, offering them as integrated capabilities to researchers.
EOSC Beyond introduces a novel concept of EOSC, establishing a federated network of pilot Nodes operating at various levels (national, regional, international, and thematic) to cater to specific scientific missions. Key objectives include accelerating the development of scientific applications, enabling Open Science through dynamic resource deployment, fostering innovation with testing environments, and aligning EOSC architecture with European data spaces.
The project advances EOSC Core through co-design methodologies, collaborating with diverse use cases from national and regional initiatives (e-Infra CZ, NFDI, NI4OS), as well as Research and e-Infrastructures (CESSDA, CNB-CSIC, EGI, Instruct-ERIC, ENES, LifeWatch, METROFood-RI).
EOSC United
The EOSC United project plays a crucial role in uniting the research community within the EOSC Federation. The EOSC EU Node, launched in autumn 2024, will serve as the foundation for the EOSC Federation, providing blueprints and an interoperability framework for future nodes. It aims to promote multidisciplinary research by leveraging FAIR data and services across Europe and beyond. EOSC United supports the European Commission and EOSC EU Node contractors in promoting resource uptake. It engages various stakeholders, facilitates user involvement through use cases and adoption calls in collaboration with EOSC Gravity to showcase early successes. The project provides feedback on the EOSC EU Node’s evolution and helps shape the EOSC Federation’s governance and operational framework. Through these efforts, EOSC United aims to solidify EOSC’s position in future EU framework programmes and ensure its success as a collaborative and sustainable research infrastructure. The project’s work is essential in realising the vision of open, accessible, and reusable scientific data across Europe.
