PhD opportunity: Computational design of ionic liquid–based systems for explosives detection

University of Southampton
Application deadline: 31 May 2026

We invite applications for a fully funded PhD project at the University of Southampton on the subject of "rational, computational design of ionic liquid–based systems for explosives detection". The project focuses on understanding and tuning molecular-level interactions between ionic liquids and explosive compounds, using electronic-structure methods and molecular modelling, to enable improved sensitivity and selectivity in detection technologies.

This project will be of particular interest to students in computational chemistry, molecular modelling, electronic structure theory, and materials.

Full details and application instructions can be found here.

This project is open only to UK nationals. It will be supervised by Professor Chris‑Kriton Skylaris and Professor Jonathan Essex through the University of Southampton’s EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Complex Integrated Systems for Defence and Security (CISDnS).
