Postdoc opportunity: in situ studies of virus replication

Umea University, Sweden
Application deadline: 22 May 2026

There is an open position for a postdoctoral researcher in the Carlson lab at Umeå University, Sweden.

The project will be centred around cryo-ET studies of RNA virus replication – core areas of expertise in our lab. The ideal candidate would have a solid background in molecular virology and/or structural biology – but we can offer training in all relevant aspects of the project and encourage talented and ambitious candidates with alternative backgrounds to apply. In the framework of a large collaborative grant, we are working together with groups that have skillsets ranging from animal models to live-cell fluorescence imaging and mathematical modelling. This network could co-host postdocs who have interests beyond my group’s core expertise.

When it comes to virology and cryo-EM, we are well equipped with BSL2 labs and a local cryo-EM facility that has e.g. a Titan Krios and Aquilos2 at BSL2 level.

We initially offer a two-year fellowship, with good possibilities for extension well beyond that time.

Feel free to get in touch with me at ars-anders.carlson@umu.se in case of questions. There’s more info on our lab website.

Applications should be submitted through the university’s application portal. The deadline to apply is 22 May, 2026.
